This study aims to explore the forms of social stigma experienced by persons with disabilities and understand its impact on their social lives. A qualitative approach was employed in this research, using a case study method that involved in-depth interviews with persons with disabilities, their families, and members of the surrounding community. Additionally, field observations and document analysis were conducted to strengthen the data. The findings reveal that social stigma against persons with disabilities in Makassar manifests in forms such as discrimination, negative stereotypes, and social exclusion. This stigma affects their self-esteem, limits access to employment, and hinders social participation. Although some initiatives from the government and local organizations aim to reduce stigma, their impact remains limited. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of increasing public awareness and strengthening inclusive policies to reduce social stigma. These findings offer significant insights into the dynamics of social stigma in urban areas and can serve as a foundation for planning more effective intervention programs.
Nasir Nasir Copyright (c) 2024 JCIC: Journal of Urban Sociology http://journal.cicofficial.com/index.php/jjus/article/view/214 Thu, 31 Oct 2024 00:00:00 +0000
