Abstract

Waste remains an unresolved issue to this day. The high volume of waste generated annually stems from human activities, leading to accumulation in final disposal sites (landfills) due to the limited capacity of these sites. This study aims to explore how sustainable waste management is carried out by communities to reduce the accumulation of waste in landfills. Using a qualitative approach, this study highlights community participation in sustainable waste management efforts, which begin with segregating types of waste and implementing the 4R principles: reduce, recycle, reuse, and recovery. Benchmarking has been conducted against several countries that implement food waste management strategies using various approaches to reduce waste accumulation.
